Couch Potato Chronicles: Running in a New Direction

Friends, I know you’ve been anxiously waiting to hear about my progress in my quest to go from sitting on the couch to perhaps wearing a catsuit. While I was only partially serious about the catsuit, I am serious about getting off the couch. I’m pleased to report that I’ve made some progress, but I also need to confess that there has been a teeny tiny pitfall as well.

The Good

I downloaded the Couch to 5K app. I really wanna be a runner. I can totally visualize it. Sometimes I’m on the treadmill in the gym. At other times I’m outdoors and the wind is running through my kinky hair (‘cause y’all know I’m not running and sweating if I have it blown out and flat ironed). Sometimes I’m alone and at other times in this vision I’m running with a pack of people and we’re, like, in a race or something. So I can see it, but I needed some tools to help me get there. By the way, the app is supposed to take me from literally sitting on the couch to running a 5K. They haven’t promised me that I would be fast at it or anything, just that I would be able to do it. Cool.

I have the app, but I needed a good pair of kicks, or sneakers, or tennis shoes as they call them in parts of Maryland. My freshman year roommate was from Maryland and she called any kind of athletic shoe “tennis shoes”. Whenever she wore her tennis shoes I would ask her if she plays tennis. The answer was always no. Sigh. Anyway, for our purposes they are running shoes. I reached out to some of my friends who are fitness enthusiasts and got some really great advice about what to look for in a tennis shoe. I mean a running shoe. I have very flat feet, so I need one with the most stability and motion control. I settled on a pair of Asics and bought them. It’s amazing what the right footwear will do for your posture and comfort. Wearing them really makes me wanna run. Kinda.

The Not So Good

So I haven’t actually run yet. But I have been off the couch. I’ve been a bit preoccupied with work and a special project outside of work, so that has caused me to be more active. Serving others can do that to you. I think I’ve watched a little less television, but here’s the not so good news: I found another show to watch. I’m a little ashamed to admit this, but I watched a new reality show on TLC calledThe Best Funeral Ever. I can’t say that I “like” the show, but I must admit that I’m a little intrigued. The show is based on a Dallas area funeral company that specializes in themed funerals, or funerals that showcase the deceased person’s career, hobby, passion or likes. It’s definitely in the “train wreck” category for me, but I may actually tune in again. Maybe. Probably. Please don’t just me.

Also, I haven’t embarked upon the stabilizer ball experiment. But, I mean, the thing has been sitting in my living room since like forever, so it isn’t going anywhere. I, however, am going running.

I had the same desires at the beginning of the new year and I told people that I was going to run. And I am running (300 meters at a time!). I know you will get to running! Those C25k programs have helped so many people. Good luck! I’ll come back and cheer you on!
